According to the Vatican press service, a car driven by a man of about 40 years entered the territory of the city-state at high speed from the outposts of the Swiss Papal Guard and gendarmerie.

A gendarmerie officer trying to stop the car fired a pistol at the wheels, the bullet hit the left front fender, but continued on the driveway.

Thereupon, security guards blocked the passage leading to the back of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Gardens and St. Martha’s Square. As a result, the car went to the courtyard of St. Damaz’s Apostolic Palace, the driver left the car and was detained by the gendarmes.

The Holy See press service noted that the man was examined by doctors, who stated that he was in a serious psychophysical condition. He is currently held in a pre-trial detention cell in the new building of the gendarmerie barracks.
