Estimating fish stocks (the number of live fish living in an area’s waters) is crucial to understanding the health of the oceans. This is especially true in coastal areas where 90 percent of the people employed in the fishing industry live and work. In the wealthiest countries, millions of dollars are spent each year on the exploitation of reserves, costly and time-consuming ventures involving sailing by boat. Fishermen in poor countries also work blindly.
Tim McClanahan and colleagues created an artificial intelligence algorithm that automatically predicts fish stocks. For this, satellite images are used, which are analyzed by a program that has undergone “deep learning”. The training was carried out by comparing the data obtained from the manual assessment of fish stocks with satellite images of the region. In trials, the algorithm successfully predicted fish stocks in the Western Indian Ocean region with 85 percent accuracy.
Accurate assessment of fish stocks is necessary not only to assess the effectiveness of environmental protection measures, but also to increase the productivity of fisheries: avoid overfishing and do not work in “empty” places.
