Researchers from Columbia University in the United States found that e-cigarettes containing nicotine are associated with an increased likelihood of binge drinking among teens. The results of the work of scientists have been published. magazine Substance Use and Abuse.

The authors analyzed data from more than 50,000 adolescents aged 13 to 18 who were surveyed between 2017 and 2019. Volunteers filled out a questionnaire in which they indicated whether they had drank in the past month.

After analyzing the information received, the scientists found that compared to those who had never used nicotine, young vapers were 21 times more likely to take part in a three- to five-day binge. Both regular smokers and vapers were 36 times more likely to binge drink ten or more times.

“While the causal relationship of these associations is unclear, the magnitude of the effect is alarming given the harm these substances do to adolescents,” the scientists wrote.
