The annual death toll from stroke worldwide could rise to 5 million by 2030. Reported by the American Academy of Neurology.

During the study, the authors analyzed World Health Data Exchange data for 1990–2019. As the world population has grown, the global death toll from ischemic stroke has increased from 2.04 million in 1990 to 3.29 million in 2019. However, the incidence of stroke has dropped from 66 strokes per 100,000 people in 1990 to 44 strokes per 100,000 people in 2019.

“This decline in stroke rates probably means that the overall increase in stroke worldwide is mainly due to population growth and aging,” said Lise Xiong of Tongji University in Shanghai, one of the study’s authors.

In addition, seven main risk factors have been identified: smoking, high sodium diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney dysfunction, high blood sugar, and high body mass index.

The researchers then extrapolated to estimate the number of deaths in 2020-2030. It is estimated that ischemic stroke will cause 4.9 million deaths in 2030. This assessment is based on efforts by doctors and governments to reduce the impact of risk factors. If these efforts are not included in the calculations, the death toll could rise to 6.4 million per year.
