Falling off a scooter, bicycle or roller skate is very different in nature of the injury from falling from one’s own height, for example, on ice. When a person stumbles or slips, he flies down at a speed of about 5 km / h. Scooters and other personal mobility aids or IMS riders fall from heights at much higher speeds, between 10 and 30 km/h. In these cases, the risk of serious injury increases several times. Nina Zubova, surgeon at the Hemotest Laboratory, told socialbites.ca about this. She explained how to avoid accidents related to using the sim and what to do if you fall off a scooter or bike.
According to the expert, most injuries from cycling, scootering and roller skating are injuries to the limbs and soft tissues, especially sprains, sprains and torn ligaments. The most vulnerable places for bruises are the skin, subcutaneous capillaries and blood vessels. Due to their damage, edema and hematoma occur.
“Usually a fall results in broken hands. In addition, scooters and cyclists often come to the traumatology department with fractures of the collarbone, shoulder, elbow joint or patella. Head injuries are also not uncommon. With a strong blow, a person can get a craniocerebral injury, sometimes with a fracture of the skull or jaw bones. Serious injuries can lead to organ damage and even internal bleeding,” warns doctor Nina Zubova.
In order to protect yourself while skiing, first of all, you should not neglect the protective equipment, you should always wear a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads, and learn to fall correctly.
“If a person realizes that they have fallen, the first thing to do is to tighten your muscles and band. It’s definitely not worth it to spread your arms out for balance or put your feet forward to slow the fall. So the risk of breaking a limb only increases. To recover from a blow to the head, you should arch your back, press your chin to your chest and, if possible, fall to the sides, ”explained the surgeon.
If the injury persists, you should not stand up immediately. First, you need to inspect yourself for visible damage. If they are not there, you can carefully stand up as soon as possible and apply cold to the bruised area. This may be, for example, ice cream in a pack or a special hypothermic package from a pharmacy. Cooling will reduce swelling and pain. As soon as the pain subsides, you should immediately go to the emergency room to rule out more serious injuries: fracture, internal bleeding or head injury. Only a doctor can understand this. If only a scrape remains at the site of impact, it is enough to treat the wound and take painkillers.
“You can treat the injury site with any pharmacy antiseptic solution or alcohol wipes. But it is not worth it to rub a banana on the bruised place or wipe the skin with saliva. The fact is that the leaves of such a large banana as saliva do not have an antiseptic effect and in no way contribute to healing. Also leaves may have traces of dirt or bacteria, and an open wound can be an ideal entryway for serious infections,” advises the Hemotest Laboratory specialist.
