Scientists have developed a plant-based cat litter. Reported by the US Department of Agriculture.
Most cat litters on the market use sodium bentonite, which has the appearance of white granules. In fact, it is a super hygroscopic white clay. But researchers are looking for a more effective substitute that will better prevent the odor from spreading.
Steve Vaughn and his colleagues decided to develop plant-based substitute. They initially tried a byproduct of maize and ethanol production, but in recent experiments they settled on a starch-based amylose inclusion complex and soy husk mixture. Soy hulls were used both as a 1 mm granulated dried material and as charcoal. Two other ingredients, guar gum and mineral oil, have also been added to ensure smooth coagulation and minimal dust emissions.
Tests have shown that the composition effectively absorbs liquid from cat secretions and reduces the strength of the smell in the room. In addition, it can inhibit the growth of many bacteria and fungi. The developers hope that the fillers will allow, among other things, to minimize the losses of farmers in the event of crop deterioration.
