The experiment showed that Joro spiders tend to freeze for long periods of time when they see a human, indicating fear. Reported by the University of Georgia.
Spiders Joro (Trichonephila clavata) is an invasive species native to eastern Asia and native to the United States. These arthropods are large (up to 3 centimeters in diameter) and brightly colored with yellow stripes. Some Americans, unaccustomed to these animals, are afraid of them – spiders seem dangerous and aggressive to them.
To see if this stance was justified, Andy Davis and his colleagues conducted experiments involving 450 spiders representing 10 different species. They were moderately disturbed by blowing air from the syringe and their reaction was observed. Joro’s spiders remained motionless for over an hour, while most spiders froze for less than a minute before returning to their normal activities.
“They tend to shut down and wait for the interference to go away. Our study shows that these spiders really fear you more than you fear them,” the scientists said.
Also, these arthropods pose no real danger. They only bite as a last resort when cornered, and their “jaws” are nearly incapable of piercing the adult skin and injecting the toxin.
