Russian scientists, together with their foreign colleagues, have developed a new type of agent against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Reported by the Federal Biotechnology Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Until recently, it was believed that it is impossible to cure HIV – you can only “suppress” it and transfer it to the chronic stage, preventing the development of AIDS. To do this, patients were given expensive antiretroviral drugs that had to be taken for life. Also, in some cases, drug resistance may develop and it may need to be changed.
In this regard, experts from the Federal Research Center for Biotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with American and Italian colleagues, proposed fundamentally new compounds to combat HIV – N-phenyl-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-1. ,2,4-triazole-3-amines. They act by inhibiting HIV reverse transcriptase and, according to the authors of the development, are able to kill the human immunodeficiency virus “in its lair” – in neurons, due to the fact that this molecule is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. . There it can destroy the virus and block HIV reverse transcriptase, the enzyme responsible for the replication of the virus. It is very important that the experimental molecule is completely safe for neurons.
“Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme that allows viruses to make copies of themselves inside the cell. With its help, viruses, in which hereditary information, such as HIV or hepatitis B virus, is found in the form of RNA, turns the infected cell into DNA to turn it into a factory for the production of new viruses, ”said Vadim. one of the authors Makarov.
The authors hope that the molecule they discovered will form the basis of a new generation of anti-HIV drugs that could rid a person of the virus forever.
