Microorganisms living in permafrost soil can process spilled diesel fuel. Reported by TASS.

The work was carried out by experts from the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. “Scientists hypothesized that soil microorganisms in arctic permafrost biomes have the ability to use diesel fuel as a nutrient medium, and then experimentally confirmed it. As a result of their vital activity, carbon is released,” the scientists said.

The authors were able to identify 8 types of microorganisms that most actively break down diesel, and these creatures remain active even at low temperatures. However, the observed effect has a side effect: During this process, carbon dioxide is released, which creates a greenhouse effect on the world’s climate. However, the environmental impact of carbon dioxide in such volumes is too weak to be measured from oil spills. Therefore, according to Oksana Masyagina, one of the study’s authors, these bacteria could be used to create preparations to clean the world from oil spills.
