Scientists studied the radiation belt of a star system using a radio telescope. This was reported by the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Strong magnetic fields create a “magnetic bubble” around the planet, a magnetosphere that can trap particles and accelerate them to nearly the speed of light. All planets with magnetic fields in the solar system, including Earth and Jupiter, have radiation belts made up of these high-energy charged particles trapped in the planet’s magnetic field. It is practically impossible to place satellites in them, but their existence was theoretically predicted even before the development of space flight.

In the new study, the authors observed the magnetosphere of the extremely cold brown dwarf LSR J1835+3259, which is intermediate between massive planets and red dwarf stars. To do this, it was necessary to coordinate the work of 39 radio dishes located in Hawaii and Germany. “By combining radio antennas from around the world, we can create incredibly high-resolution images to see things that no one has seen before,” the authors explain.

As a result, it was possible to detect the presence of a cloud of high-energy electrons captured by the object’s strong magnetic field, forming a “two-lobed” structure similar to radio images of Jupiter’s radiation belts. According to the authors, much of their work proves the theoretical possibility of observing alien radiation belts, and with the commissioning of more powerful radio telescopes, it is likely that it will be possible to detect the magnetic field of less massive planets. The presence of a strong magnetic field is considered a prerequisite for the existence of highly developed life, at least on the surface of the planet.
