Three new tick species have been discovered and identified by TMU scientists that may be carriers of diseases such as plague and West Nile fever. This is due to the results of a published study. Persian Journal of Acarology.
Scientists at Tyumen Medical University (TMU) discovered that the collected specimens could be identified as new species, after examining a large amount of literature, including Chinese and Japanese. According to experts, these parasites are common in Siberia and Mongolia.
“The parasites identified belong to two families – Spinturnicidae and Macronyssidae,” said Maria Orlova, an associate professor of biological sciences at TMU.
Representatives of the first family are known as carriers of bartonellosis, and the second – a number of dangerous natural focal infections.
One of the ticks was obtained in 2020 from the preserved collections of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University when current bat collections were examined. The rest were collected from bats caught in Buryatia and Tuva during their lifetimes and then released into the wild.
