The country’s meteorological agency said on Sunday, May 14, Hurricane Mocha, which hit 130 miles per hour (209 km/h), made landfall near the village of Sittwe in Rakhine state.
According to the Myanmar Military Information Directorate, the storm damaged homes, electrical infrastructure, cell phone towers, boats and power poles in the villages of Sittwe, Kyaukpyu and Gwa.
Local media report that the streets and basements of houses in the low-lying areas of Sittwe are flooded, with internet and mobile communications unavailable in most of the area.
More than 4,000 of Sittwe’s 300,000 residents were evacuated to other cities, with about 20,000 taking refuge in monasteries, pagodas and schools on the city’s highlands.
