Portugal approves euthanasia law without the approval of President Rebelo de Sousa

Republic Assembly Portugal passed the law to legalize euthanasia by a large majority this Friday, in a fourth vote to overcome the doubts expressed several times by country’s president, conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The text has 129 votes in favor, 81 against and one abstention, Above an absolute majority (116 seats) to force Rebelo de Sousa enacts the new law within eight days at the latest.

By now, the head of state had overturned previous legislative initiatives.in the latter case, requesting clarification on who should identify the patient’s physical disability or how medical supervision is guaranteed throughout the process.

The version confirmed this Friday is essentially the same as on March 31. Organizers deny that although this step is fully implemented, it constitutes an offense against the presidential figure. The war between Rebelo de Sousa and the prime minister, Antonio Costa.

Rebelo de Sousa publicly denounced Costa for not accepting the resignation presented by the Minister of Infrastructure, realizing that citizens’ trust in Portugal’s higher institutions was at stake.
