Scientists from King’s College London conducted a study that found a slowdown in lung development in children living near busy highways. Also, adults who live within 50 meters of major highways have a 10% higher risk of developing lung cancer. INVITRO therapist Ivan Romasov told socialbites.ca about this. Oh who explained that living on the side of the highway is particularly harmful.

“For one, car exhaust contains large amounts of carbon dioxide. It can lead to the development of hypercapnia (decrease in blood oxygen saturation) and, as a result, to disruption of the respiratory system. Second, many fuel additives contain lead, which can increase the octane rating of the fuel. It is highly toxic to the respiratory and nervous systems for both adults and children. It also has a strong teratogenic effect. In addition, aromatic hydrocarbons are the most potent oncogenes and mutagens. Thirdly, the composition of the exhaust includes solid fine particles (PM particles). Together with worn tire particles, they form road dust. Their main danger lies in their small size. Road dust of such a small size can reach the smallest parts of the respiratory system, accumulating in them, forming a solid, airtight mass. This threatens the development of diseases such as chronic bronchitis, obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma.”

Children, the elderly and people with certain chronic diseases suffer most from living close to roads.

“First of all, we are talking about chronic diseases of the bronchopulmonary system, diseases of the cardiovascular and immune system. This happens due to a decrease in the barrier function of the respiratory system, chronic inflammation due to the constant presence of fine particles and a violation of the system of recognition of foreign antigens by the human immune system, ”said the doctor.

Regarding noise, the mechanism of action on health is different: noise contributes to chronic stress on the body, which can lead to disruption of the thymus gland, in which immune system cells mature and, as a result, immunity decreases. .

“Also, noise contributes to high blood pressure and poor sleep, which amplifies this effect. And this, in turn, can lead to other distant cardiovascular disasters: stroke, aortic aneurysms, progression of atherosclerosis, and heart failure,” the therapist warned.

If there is no way to move, then in the modern world there are many devices that will make life easier for you.

“The first of these is the grid on the windows. You can simply put mosquito nets and small nets on the ventilation grilles. Most importantly, it is removable and washable. Owners who do this regularly see how much dirt has been washed off the windows and can appreciate the effect. However, such grids capture only large particles. Air washers, air cleaners, air conditioning systems or air conditioners – any of these devices will help to cope with fine particles entering the apartment. Ideally, it is recommended to buy those that can filter fine particles of the smallest diameter, ”advised the doctor.
