The new expiratory analyzer will allow to detect COVID-19 infection with high accuracy. Reported by the University of Colorado at Boulder.

With each exhale, humans expel more than 1,000 different biological molecules that become available for chemical analysis. They carry information about processes in the body, and so scientists have tried for years to use dogs and mice to diagnose various diseases in humans. However, if the substance can sense the animal, it can be recognized with the help of a gas analyzer.

Now engineers have developed a laser breath analyzer adapted to detect signs of COVID-19 infection. During the trial, the authors took breath samples from 170 students between May 2021 and January 2022, and each underwent PCR testing for covid. It turned out that although the breath analysis was performed in real time, the result of the PCR test and the gas analyzer overlapped in 85% of the cases. Unlike nasal swab, this method is non-invasive and does not require fasting before the procedure.

The only drawback of this device is its size – it can be compared to a large table, since it includes a laser and mirror system. However, in the future, the authors hope to reduce its size to a chip that will provide continuous real-time health diagnosis using a wearable device. Potentially, it will be possible to detect not only COVID-19, but also cancer and other dangerous diseases.
