About half of Chicago residents under the age of 40 have witnessed an act of gun violence in their lifetime. Reported by Cambridge University.

A study that followed the lives of Chicagoans from childhood and adolescence to early middle age in the 1990s found that 56% of blacks and Hispanics in the city had witnessed at least one gun attack by the time they turned forty. For white residents of the city, the figure was lower – about 25%. Among study participants of all races, 50% witnessed the shooting, with the average age only 14 at the time of this event.

Also, scientists have found inequality in the distribution of executions. Black participants had 12 times more shots fired within 250 meters of their home than white participants. Hispanics were nearly four times more likely to be shot near their homes than whites.

“Current evidence suggests that all of the long-term stress associated with gun violence [плохому]: from lower test scores in schoolchildren to reduced life expectancy due to heart disease,” summarizes Charles Lanfear, one of the study’s authors.

The problem of gun violence in the United States is particularly acute because free purchase of shotguns, rifles and pistols has historically been allowed in this country. This right is guaranteed by the second amendment of the Constitution, as its authors envision, armed people must resist the tyranny and oppression of both the government and external enemies. However, in recent years, according to some public figures in the United States, guns are more an instrument of mass murder (“shooting”) and criminal violence than they serve to protect freedom.
