Two more American destroyers will be deployed to the Rota naval base in Spain. This was stated in a press release from the Spanish Ministry of Defense. TASS
The relevant agreement was signed by Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles and US Ambassador Julissa Reynoso at the defense ministry headquarters in Madrid, as part of commitments, following the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez last year.
The Communiqué states that it allows for the expansion of the mandate for both civilian and U.S. military personnel to deploy missions at a joint Spanish-American naval base from four to six ships without changing their force types or maximum force levels.
As expected by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the first of the announced destroyers will arrive in Rota in 2024. They added that with this agreement, Spain and the United States “reaffirm their commitment to NATO in the new context of the Ukraine conflict and the security situation in Europe.”
