Researchers at Stockholm University have found that long journeys are associated with less physical activity, being overweight and having trouble sleeping. Also, depending on where the office is located, the employee may also have a tendency to drink excessively. The results of the research conducted by the experts are as follows: published on the university website.
To conduct the study, the researchers used data from the Swedish Longitudinal Health Survey, conducted between 2012 and 2018. In total, experts managed to study data on the lifestyle and place of work of 13 thousand people.
As it turns out, commuting more than 3km increases the likelihood of physical inactivity, overweight and poor sleep. People who worked more than 40 hours and commuted more than five hours a week were more likely to be physically inactive and have trouble sleeping, compared to those who commuted between one and five hours.
“Our analyzes showed that participants were more likely to have the first signs of alcoholism when their workplace was in a high socioeconomic area or near a bar,” the researchers said.
The authors were also able to identify the ideal location for the job – it should be within 3 kilometers or less from home. According to scientists, people are more active and less stressed due to more free time not spent on the road.
