In Moscow, an associate professor from the Moscow Institute of Power Engineering fell victim to telephone scams. The attackers received more than 2 million rubles from the teacher, reported Telegram channel is on Shot.
According to the publication, during a lecture led by a 61-year-old associate professor, his colleague stepped into the audience and said that the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education would soon call the lecturer.
After the lecture, the man was contacted via a messenger by an unidentified person who introduced himself as an official. He said that FSB officials will call the teacher soon and must follow their instructions. The scammers then persuaded the Muscovite to transfer their savings to a “secure account” so that it would not be handed over to terrorist financiers.
The teacher transferred 2.1 million rubles to the card of a colleague, who said that his deputy minister was calling. After that, the account was blocked.
Law enforcement is investigating the identity of the perpetrators. They also find that a colleague of the teacher was involved in the commission of a crime. Regarding the incident, a criminal case was initiated under the article “Fraud committed on a particularly large scale by an organized group”. Perpetrators face up to ten years in prison.
