Soup is a traditional Russian dish that is usually boiled in meat or fish broth. Usually such soups are very rich and contain a lot of fat. Also, soup is a very high-calorie dish because it usually contains potatoes and noodles. Such a combination can harm people with diseases of the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. Ekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterologist, candidate of medical sciences at the Gemotest Laboratory told socialbites.ca about this.
“Soups on fatty concentrated broths, such as borscht, kharcho, solyanka, should not be eaten by people with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: pancreatitis, gastritis, cholecystitis, enterocolitis. If a person with such a pathology eats fatty soup, he may feel pain and burning in the epigastric region – typical symptoms of exacerbation of gastrointestinal diseases, ”said the gastroenterologist.
However, the expert noted that there is no definite answer to the question of who should not eat the soup. After all, in addition to fatty meat or fish soups, there are others, such as vegetarian ones, such as gazpacho, mushrooms or beans, which are prepared without prior frying.
“Light vegetable soups are considered a diet food because they contain practically no fat and contain a lot of fiber: carrots, beets, onions, cabbage, broccoli, peppers. Such dishes normalize the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and help to compensate for the deficiency of vital vitamins and minerals. Vegetable soups can be included in the diet as a healthy diet during weight loss or treatment. You can also add legumes to increase the nutritional value,” advised Ekaterina Kashukh.
The gastroenterologist added that broths can still be recommended to people who are weak from the disease and have difficulty chewing. For one serving, a person can get the usual calories and nutrients. In addition, the soup partially quenches the feeling of thirst. At the same time, it does not have miraculous properties and does not contribute to healing in any way.
“The main thing in nutrition is not to force yourself to eat something just because this food or product is considered healthy. But if you liked the soup, you should not refuse it, ”the gastroenterologist concluded.
