Astronomers watched an enlarged sun-like star swallow the planet. This astronomical association has been reported by AURA.
According to modern scientific data, in the later stages of evolution, the Sun and similar stars turn into red giants. The diameter of such stars increases many times over to the point where the nearest planets are inside the star.
Ryan Lau and his colleagues confirmed this behavior of the stars during their observations with the Gemini South telescope. It is difficult to distinguish a planetary extinction eruption from other flares such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections. To do this, the telescope must have a high resolution and be able to monitor the temporal parameters of the flare.
The extinction explosion lasted about 100 days, and the characteristics of the light curve, as well as the parameters of the ejected material, allowed astronomers to determine the mass of the star and planet. The material that was launched consisted of approximately 33 Earth masses of hydrogen and 0.33 Earth masses of dust.
Based on this, astronomers have calculated that the mass of the parent star is about 0.8–1.5 solar masses, and the absorbed planet reaches 1–10 Jupiter masses.
According to scientists, a similar fate awaits the Earth and the solar system in about 5 billion years.
