Scientists from Copenhagen University Hospital found that postpartum depression is more common in women with depression associated with hormonal contraceptives. The research was published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.
Scientists analyzed the data of 188,000 primitive women. 3% had a history of depression associated with initiation of hormonal contraception and 9.8% had a depression unrelated to initiation of hormones. Researchers have found that women who have experienced depression have a slightly higher risk of postpartum depression. But not for everyone, but only for those whose depression can be attributed to starting taking hormones.
“Importantly, the findings do not imply that the use of hormonal contraception leads to a higher risk of postpartum depression, but does suggest that a history of hormonal depression may predispose to postpartum depression. This could be a useful clinical tool for identifying women at increased risk for postpartum depression,” the authors said. .
