The main danger of tsunamis is that they are unexpected. In an interview with socialbites.ca, a physicist-oceanologist, head of industry at the Institute of Applied Physics, the most unsafe region of Russia for the occurrence of a tsunami is the Far East coast. Alexei Slyunyaev, Professor of Basic Mathematics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, AV Gaponov-Grekhov Academy of Sciences.

“First of all, the danger concerns the Far East coast. It is well known that this region is prone to tsunamis from the Pacific Ocean. It is no accident that the word “tsunami” itself is of Japanese origin. But it is possible in the Black Sea and other large water areas, but on a correspondingly smaller scale, ”Slyunyaev explained.

According to the scientist, the wave transforms into a tsunami wave when it transfers the energy it receives from the excitation source to a noticeable distance and then comes ashore.

At the same time, the reasons for the formation of such a wave are diverse, among them: the activity of atmospheric fronts, the fall of a meteorite and unexpected landslides.

“Although any major disturbance on the sea surface can be suggested as tsunami sources, still most dangerous tsunamis are associated with Earth’s tectonic activity,” Slyunyaev said.

For more on killer waves, the conditions under which a tsunami can occur on the Moscow River, the difficulty of predicting such events, and how the weather affects the likelihood of dangerous waves, see Killer waves. report “socialbites.ca”.
