It is considered a safe, bisphenol A-free disposable tableware. Manufacturers replace a hazardous substance with a relatively “safe” analogue, bisphenol S (BPS). The therapist Margarita Pozharova at INVITRO told socialbites.ca about this.

According to the expert, it is better to choose dishes made of polypropylene labeled “5” and “PP”, and avoid products labeled “7”, “3” or “PC” – they contain harmful polycarbonate. But you need to remember that polypropylene dishes are not designed for storage, as they react with food and drinks that contain alcohol.

“If possible, you should use disposable tableware as little as possible. If there is a situational need, it is better to use paper plates, and constantly give preference to dishes made of glass and stainless steel, ”explained the doctor.

Additionally, many types of plastic release toxins when heated. With rare exceptions, plastic dishes should not be heated above 80 degrees. Dishes made of polystyrene marked “PS 6” are especially harmful when heated. The most poisonous tableware made from plastic imitation porcelain is melamine. Beverage bottles should not be left in direct sunlight or near fire.

“Recommendation before the kebab season – immediately after removing the meat from the fire, you should not immediately put it on a plastic dish, it is better to provide a dish of suitable material for this purpose, and then lay out the already slightly cooled product. In portions on a disposable plate, if there is no other at the picnic “, the doctor advised.

The therapist also reminded that only dishes with special markings can be heated in microwave ovens. Symbols and text, such as Microwave, MICRO, indicate that the container is suitable for heating food in the microwave.

“For the temporary storage of cold food, any container with a glass and fork symbol is suitable. It is not necessary to store alcohol-containing drinks in polypropylene dishes – the number 5 in the triangle: polypropylene reacts with ethanol and forms toxic phenol and formaldehyde. Since the reaction takes a long time, you can pour alcohol from such a glass and drink it. But it is not worth storing the wine in polypropylene for months, ”the doctor advised.
