Cypriot psychologists from the University of Nicosia have compiled a list of the most common disadvantages of loneliness experienced by people who are not in a relationship. The researchers published their findings. magazine Personality and Individual Differences.
“Loneliness is the absence of a permanent sexual partner. It is extremely common among the population today. “Many are emphasizing the advantages of this lifestyle, but we decided to focus our attention on the disadvantages.”
To do this, they took a sample of 238 unrelated people who filled out a demographic survey and also talked about the disadvantages of being single. Thus, 78 cons of loneliness were determined. In the second phase of the study, the scientists took another sample of 1115 people who evaluated all the deficiencies identified. Thus, the most common problems faced by single people were identified.
Among the most common and most unpleasant, we managed to distinguish: lack of regular and safe sex, lack of affection and love, absence of someone to motivate to improve. Other shortcomings included lack of support, negative emotions, and lack of someone to do things with.
“Moreover, we found that female participants rated lack of support as a more important handicap than male participants. “We also found that participants who had stronger social support from other people tended to underestimate the disadvantages of loneliness,” the researchers said.
