Researchers at Tufts University have found that eating whole grains can reduce symptoms of anxiety and mood disorders. Research published in the journal Advances in Nutrition.

Cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and obesity are associated with cognitive decline. This suggests that changes in diet may protect against these diseases as well as mental decline. Increased consumption of whole grains has previously been associated with lower cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure levels.

In the new review, the researchers analyzed all available studies that evaluated the relationship between whole grain consumption and cognitive performance between study start and August 2021. A total of 23 studies were included in the analysis.

Despite some heterogeneity in results, replacing white rice with brown rice was associated with better cognitive outcomes. But overall, the evidence for any link between whole grains and cognitive function was inconclusive.

However, some studies have reported improvements in symptoms of depression and other mood disorders. It can be assumed that people who eat more whole grains lead a healthier lifestyle overall, which explains the results.
