Researchers from the University of Leicester in England found that brisk walking for half an hour a day extends a person’s lifespan by 16 years. scientists’ work published magazine Communication Biology (part of the Nature journal group).

The authors came to these conclusions by analyzing data from more than 400,000 participants collected by UK Biobank. It turns out that those who choose to walk regularly live 16 years longer.

According to researchers, brisk walking for half an hour a day can increase telomere length. Telomeres are located at the ends of chromosomes and the rate of aging of the body depends on their length. That is, the longer they are, the lower the biological age and vice versa.

There can also be physical, mental and social benefits from taking regular walks. But scientists have compared walking speed with genetic data for the first time.
