Scientists from the Open University of San Raffaele have proven the health benefits of red wine, but recommend the consumption of non-alcoholic wine. Review study published in the journal nutrients.

In the new study, researchers gathered data from high-quality wine health studies published between January 1, 2000 and February 28, 2023. The final analysis included 91 studies.

Scientists have shown that consumption of red wine increases antioxidant levels, reduces the risk of thrombosis, chronic inflammation, blood lipid levels, and has a positive effect on the gut microbiome in general. Data regarding its effect on cardiac function and blood pressure are conflicting. Red wine also lowered insulin and protein levels in the urine of diabetic patients without affecting their body weight.

The review authors believe long-term studies are needed to test the safety of red wine. They also noted that non-alcoholic red wine could be a good source of antioxidants.

The health benefits of drinking red wine are still controversial. The Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and Cancer Prevention Guidelines do not recommend drinking alcohol, but research has shown that small amounts of red wine can benefit the cardiovascular system. Red wine contains varying levels of micronutrients (such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, copper, and iron) and several B vitamins. More than a hundred different types of polyphenols, including flavonoids, have been found in red wine. These substances have strong antioxidant activity.
