Scientists at Aarhus University have developed and tested an ear EEG device similar to an in-ear earphone that could help detect Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases in the future. This has been reported area University.
Recent research has shown that a person’s sleep patterns can indicate early signs of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. But the recording of the electrical activity of the brain is usually done in the hospital, which does not allow its mass production. Scientists have developed a device that reads the electrical activity of the brain during sleep.
The device looks like an in-ear headset. Its advantage is that the device can be used in everyday life. This makes potential ear EEG technology a good screening tool to use at home such as blood pressure devices.
“Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are diseases that develop over the years. They’re usually only discovered when you begin to develop cognitive impairments: problems with memory, sleep, or movement. We hope our device will allow us to identify the signs of these diseases 10-15 years before the first symptoms.”
