“Midwives have a personality profile that differs significantly from the general population. On average, 85 percent of the Swedish population has significantly lower emotional stability, extraversion, agreeableness, and responsibility than the obstetricians in our study. “We can’t help but be surprised when the differences are so obvious,” said study authors Petri Cajonius.
This was found during an online survey in which members of the Swedish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology were identified according to a five-factor personality model. Plus 15 questions focused on making urgent decisions during childbirth. Obstetricians had the largest gap with the average person in terms of neuroticism.
The authors of the study attribute this to the fact that obstetricians at work regularly encounter and adapt to crisis situations.
