Scientists at the Federal University of Uberlandia have suggested that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can be replaced by regular consumption of sardines. Research published in the journal Limits in Nutrition.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are important in the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases associated with chronic inflammation: type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and hypertension. The effectiveness of omega-3s is still a subject of research.

Scientists have noted that sardines are a rich source of calcium (better than other types of fish). About 100 grams of sardines provide 38% of the recommended calcium intake for adults. Also, sardines can be a source of iron, including for people who don’t eat meat. Sardines are also rich in magnesium, taurine and arginine, which are known for their cardioprotective effects.

In general, research has shown that eating omega-3 fatty acids from fish has a significant effect, although they are oxidized during cooking. Therefore, sardines can be an economical source of omega-3s. The scientists noted that clinical trials are needed to see if eating sardines is more beneficial than taking supplements.
