The effectiveness of a new artificial pancreas in the fight against diabetes has been proven in clinical trials. Reported by the University of Virginia.
Tandem Diabetes Care Control-IQ is a diabetes management device that automatically monitors and regulates blood sugar. The device is equipped with an insulin pump controlled by a computer based on information about the person’s glucose level. If necessary, the dose of insulin injected is adjusted automatically. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the system for people ages 6 and older with type 1 diabetes.
Now scientists have conducted clinical trials involving 369 people aged 2 to 72 years. Of these, 256 were assigned to use Control-IQ and 113 were assigned to the control group. It turned out that those who used the device were 13% more likely to have their blood sugar levels in the target range than those who manually inject insulin. The advantage was observed both during the day and at night, although the recovery was stronger at night. The mean hemoglobin A1c (glycosylated) level in users of the system decreased from 7.5% to 7%, compared with a decrease from 7.6% to 7.5% in the control groups.
Based on the test results, the authors concluded that this system can be recommended to all patients living with type 1 diabetes.
