IN VI AND. Vernadsky (GEOKHI) RAS found that 41% of the Moscow region within the Third Ring Road is exposed to environmental risk from heavy metals associated with urban dust. The results of the analysis of the city’s dust in the capital were shared with socialbites.ca at the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
It was determined that Moscow city dust was contaminated with antimony, zinc, lead, cadmium, copper, molybdenum and mercury. Their content in urban dust averages 0.1%.
“In our study, we found that the main source of heavy metals in dust is the operation of vehicles, namely the wear of brake pads and tires, as well as road, metal and other parts of vehicles.” researcher socialbites.ca.nanoparticles geochemistry laboratory researcher GEOKHI RAS told Alexander Ivaneev.
In addition, scientists have also linked soil weathering, industrial activities (construction, metalworking, electrolyte and optoelectronic production), as well as the operation of rail transport to sources of pollution.
Despite such a large area of pollution, scientists managed to find almost uncontaminated areas of Moscow. Read more about the cleanest places in the capital in the material “socialbites.ca”.
