The network of laboratory analysis clinics “Invitro” conducted a study according to the results of which more than three quarters of Russian residents are known to be immune to the measles virus.
In 2022, more than 52,000 tests for antibodies to measles were performed in Invitro laboratories. At least 68% of the results obtained were positive, indicating the body’s immune response to this infection. 10% of the tests performed were suspicious: In such cases, with continued clinical suspicion, the patient is advised to repeat the study in a few weeks.
In percent, the number of positive results for the measles virus in 2022 is 78% – this is an indicator of herd immunity formed.
“The immune response may be reduced after any past illness or vaccination, but only if for one reason or another the person’s immunity is reduced, or if a sufficient number of years have passed. If the double vaccination was carried out correctly and with normal preparations, which are stored and transported and correctly applied taking into account the cold chain, then a conditionally healthy adult will have immunity, ”said the infectious disease specialist, chief physician Andrei Pozdnyakov. INVITRO-Siberian laboratory.
However, Invitro notes that this data cannot be used as the results of a full-fledged population survey, as the tests are optional. That is, the most active stratum of society was tested – Russians, who were worried about their health.
According to Andrey Pozdnyakov, measles concern is justified and
this is especially true for people in the so-called risk group – these are health workers, public transport, utilities and customs workers.
Among other things, the doctor emphasized that vaccination against measles without preliminary tests and studies is pointless.
“If a person does not know about the vaccine or there are factors that reduce the immune response, then it is better to check the level of antibodies using a laboratory test and only vaccinate if the result is negative. Blind vaccination doesn’t make much sense,” said the doctor.
