LDPR drafted a bill providing criminal liability for contempt of Russian passport, reports DEA Newsreferring to this document.
It is proposed to make appropriate amendments to Article 329 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
“Violation of the State Emblem of the Russian Federation, the State Flag of the Russian Federation or the passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation is punishable by a restriction of freedom of up to one year or by forced labor for the same year. imprisonment or detention for three to six months or deprivation of liberty for up to one year.”
As stated in the explanatory note to the document, as of February 24, 2022, information began to appear in the media about Russian citizens burning their passports in front of the camera.
Also, currently acts aimed at willfully damaging one’s passport are only subject to Article 19.16 of the Administrative Offenses Code (CAO). It states that it may contain signs of administrative offense determined by the article. According to this article, “deliberate destruction or damage” of such a document, “negligent storage” causing its “loss”, “entails administrative liability in the form of a fine of 100 to 300 rubles.”
