Scientists from the University of Lisbon discovered an ancient female skeleton with a massive bone growth in her hip, which formed after a serious injury and could severely limit her mobility. Research published International Journal of Paleopathology.
Archaeologists discovered a dismembered woman’s skeleton in the ancient necropolis of the Church of Sant Julian in Portugal in 2002. They found their remains among 106 adults and 45 children who lived between 600 and 200 years ago. The woman’s height was 1.54 meters. She lived more than 50 years. The scientists found him lying on his back with his hands on his pelvis, a coin in his left forearm, and his head tilted to the right.
An 8 cm growth has occurred where the pectineus muscle joins the femur and pubic bones. The researchers found no evidence of a fracture in the femur. They concluded that the woman suffered a muscle injury shortly before her death and lived with it for six weeks to a year. The growth will prevent the woman from making any dynamic movements or carrying heavy loads. He seems to have received help from relatives or society, which allowed him to live with his disability for a while.
