Scientists at the University of Camerino in Italy have found that probiotic supplements are effective at fighting oxidative stress and inflammation caused by lack of sleep. Study published magazine nutrients.

Lack of sleep usually involves a person who sleeps less than seven hours but more than four hours. This disruption leads to a number of brain problems, including inflammation (the body’s defensive response to some type of injury or virus, often leading to self-harm) and oxidative stress. It occurs when the amount of antioxidant enzymes in the body decreases and an excess of free radicals is formed – reactive oxygen species that react with the molecules of a living cell and destroy it.

“Lack of sleep can disrupt the composition of the gut microbiota. By causing the destruction of the gut epithelial barrier, disease can allow entry of bacteria and their end products, thereby affecting the host and promoting inflammation. Thus, the inflammation associated with sleep loss may be at least in part due to altered gut microbiota physiology. “That’s why we decided to check how probiotics would affect the state of the body.”

The scientists injected a mixture of several types of probiotics into mice that had no sleep problems or disturbances. The researchers also assessed the extent of oxidative damage and inflammation in the brain and at the systemic level, using biochemical and morphological methods before and after exposure to probiotics.

As it turns out, probiotic supplements reduce the effect of inflammation and oxidative stress. The underlying mechanism is associated with restoring the balance of intestinal flora, improving intestinal permeability and modulating immune function, while reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines. In addition, probiotics have been observed to modulate both endogenous and exogenous reactive oxygen species levels and ultimately reduce oxidative stress.
