Food processing plants and apartment buildings of 10 or more floors are important sources of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In this respect informs Pohang University of Science and Technology.
Nitrogen dioxide is a poisonous gas that forms in many industrial plants and leaves a characteristic “foxtail” – an orange streak of smoke. Hyun Joo Lee and colleagues decided to study the distribution of this gas in California using the satellite-installed TROPOMI instrument.
During the analyzes, the concentration of this gas was handled in 500×500 square meters, and measurements were made in 2018-2019. The largest number of nitrogen dioxide emissions turned out to be associated with food processing businesses and apartment buildings of 10 floors and above. This picture has not changed even after the changes introduced to automobile traffic.
Emissions in residential areas are assumed to be associated with hot water boilers, space heaters and other similar devices. At the same time, scientists previously discovered that household appliances (NO2). Now this fact can be used in the analysis of the ecological situation.
It is worth noting that the study was conducted in California, where they used completely different heating and water heating systems compared to Russia.
