Basically, Russian parents believe that their children will be able to make the final choice of profession at a more mature age. However, according to a survey conducted at Rebotica’s online school of IT professions, they are confident that it is in the final years to provide the child with maximum support in the area of u200bu200bmore development.
“socialbites.ca” got acquainted with the results of the study.
Parents were asked to answer the question at what age they chose a profession. 33% of the respondents said that they made this choice in high school and the same number of respondents (33%) said that they did not work in the specialty they studied at university. 13% of the participants said that the first higher education did not benefit them in their professional activities and they had to go to a second higher education. 10% said they finally decided on a career while studying at university.
When asked whether parents of today’s students have been helped by their parents in choosing a career, 61% of respondents said they made the choice on their own, even though their parents tried to impose another professional field on them. 32% of them said that they try to understand the interests of their parents who play a role in choosing a profession, and try to provide education in this area. Only 1% of respondents complained that the choice was made for them, while 1% of respondents said they chose the same profession as their parents.
The majority (67% of respondents) said that their children are working in different directions, but are not yet ready to make a final choice. Compared to how respondents themselves choose a profession, a significant trend today is the emphasis on understanding children’s interests and real abilities rather than imposing the opinion of the older generation. 19% of respondents said they already understand in which direction their child would like to grow as a professional.
Methodologists asked parents if their children were now ready to make an informed career choice. 80% of this question answered that it is too early to talk about a conscious choice, since a child will not be able to form a completely realistic picture of a particular profession. At the same time, they noted that it is important at this time to help children decide on their professional interests. 20% of respondents said that their children can make an informed choice about their future career today.
When parents were asked if they wanted to influence their child’s career choice, 67% answered negatively. They explained that it is important to make this choice on your own without pressure. 19% of the participants trust their children less and want to play an important role in choosing a profession because they want to protect their children from a possible mistake.
“The most positive trend of today’s parents is their awareness and understanding of the modern world: speed, variability and a radical difference from 25-35 years ago. Now we see that the dialogue with children is shifting from “I know better, listen to me” to “Let’s understand together what you are interested in and understand together so that you can enjoy professional activities in the future”. “Perhaps this is a result of parents rethinking their experience,” said Boris Hovsepyan, co-founder and product director of Rebotica.
