The way of malaria mosquitoes from America to Europe was through Siberia. This was reported by TASS with reference to the press service of Tomsk State University.
During the study, the authors studied more than 1,300 genes and sequenced the genomes of 13 species. Then, based on DNA data, an evolutionary tree of two species living in North America was built on the basis of these insects. Upstairs was the Siberian malaria mosquito Anopheles waitedhouseDiscovered by Tomsk scientists. It was he who served as the ancestor of all other Eurasian species, including those living in Europe.
Mosquitoes arrived in Siberia via the Isthmus of Bering, where they began to adapt to harsh conditions. So they had a complete diapause – the acquired ability to hibernate. Females fertilized before winter drink blood for the last time, but they do not spend it on the development of eggs, they turn it into fat. All men die. After awakening in the spring, the females fly, feed on blood and lay eggs, after which individuals of both sexes appear.
The harsh conditions forced mosquitoes to develop adaptive mechanisms at the genetic level, which helped them adapt to various weather and climatic conditions and spread further – already in the Old World, where they became carriers of dangerous diseases, as well as in their homeland.
