Russian scientists have discovered an easy way to synthesize selenium-containing heterocycles needed in the manufacture of medicinal products. This was reported by the press service of the RNF.

In addition to the main function of the drug, the most important indicator is its price. If the production of some active substances can be reduced several times in price, drugs based on it can move to another class and become widely available from optional and rare. In this regard, scientists are constantly working to improve the process of drug synthesis or replace the active substance with a cheaper full analogue.

Russian and foreign colleagues and chemists of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia have discovered a new class of selenium-containing cyclic organic molecules obtained by the reaction. [3+2]-cycloadditions. Unlike analogues, the new reaction proceeds in a single “step” under mild conditions and is extremely effective – the product yield is about 96%.

Clear selenium-containing molecules are similar to those used in current anti-inflammatory and antioxidant drugs such as ebselen, but are much easier to obtain. Thus, ebselen is used in the treatment of completely different diseases, from fungal, bacterial and viral infections (including COVID-19) to stroke and neuropsychiatric disorders. This similarity indicates that the new substances will also have a wide range of biological activities – the scientists plan to find out during further studies.

ancient biologists approvedthat the moths’ “tails” act as decoys for bats.
