In the first incident, four people (three men and one woman) were shot dead in the town of Acontitla. Shortly after, the bodies of the two men were deposited in the municipal seat of Tihuatlán. Mexico’s State Attorney General’s Office confirmed the guilt of six people and announced that it is investigating facts that it says point to a possible showdown between rival organized crime groups in the region. In a press release, he explained that prosecutors, experts and police officers affiliated with the ministry are taking legal action to establish the reasons, to find out whether there is a connection between the two incidents and to find out the whereabouts of those responsible.

Located in the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz has been mired in violence for two decades in connection with drug gangs and crime syndicates dedicated to kidnapping and alleged piso collection operations. As reported Tuesday by the Secretariat for Citizen Safety and Protection (SSPC), the number of deliberate homicides in Mexico rose 6.43% per year last January to 2,582 homicides, an average of more than 83 per day.
