Climatologist Alexei Kokorin believes that the eruption of Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka could cause a slight global cooling. DEA News.

“The impact of any volcanic eruption is strong when the products of the eruption are driven into the stratosphere. If it does, then this is clearly short-term – a year or two, almost more, which would signal a slight global cooling,” Kokorin explained.

He cited the situation at Eyjafjallajokull volcano in southern Iceland as an example. In 2010, most of the airspace in Northern Europe was closed when the volcanic eruption caused the release of large volumes of ash. But the ash did not reach the stratosphere, so its effect on the climate was negligible.

Stratosphere – A layer of the Earth’s atmosphere from 11 to 50 kilometers.

Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka threw Ash column up to 12 km high.
