Stress, criticism, moral pressure, lack of support and assistance are the most common manifestations of toxic management, which affects both the well-being of employees and the work of the company as a whole. Olesya Svistunova, co-founder of SOFI-Consult HR agency, told socialbites.ca about this. She explained how to recognize a toxic leader.
The first sign is unreasonably strict requirements for subordinates.
“You’re going to get a lot of reproaches for being late, even for a good reason. If you are sick, it will be scary to call the manager and warn him that you need to go to bed. You will again hear a lot of interesting things about yourself, ”said he.
Also, constant criticism speaks of the toxic nature of the leader.
“No matter how hard you try and what results you get, the manager doesn’t seem to notice. But as soon as they make a mistake, they snoop right away, overtly and with the transition to personalities. The leader is not looking for a way out of the situation, but the person to blame. And he shamelessly declares that the culprit is lazy, stupid, and that’s why everything happened, ”explained the expert.
Self-affirmation at the expense of subordinates is another common wake-up call.
“Personal success is impossible because the leader does not allow you to significantly influence anything. Often such managers break up large tasks and distribute them among employees, delegating them to simple performers. No one but the leader himself feels professional passion and responsibility. As a result, all the laurels go to the leader, all the kicks and slaps on the back of the head go to his subordinates, ”says the expert.
Lack of support is also a manifestation of a toxic nature.
“When a leader sees that something is not right, he does not rush to teach and share his experiences. On the contrary, it is beneficial for him that his subordinates mow and have the opportunity to save the situation, ”Svistunova concluded.
