Polar bears live in extremely cold conditions where temperatures can drop to -40 degrees and below. They are able to survive in the Arctic thanks to the unique structure of the fur, which not only retains body heat but also allows them to absorb solar energy. White fur transmits light well without delaying it. The skin of bears is black, and vice versa, it warms well in the sun – if animals had black fur, the sun would not heat the body, but the outer part of the skin.
Trisha Andrew and her colleagues have succeeded in making an artificial material with similar properties. The top layer of this fabric consists of threads that transmit visible light to the lower layer, such as polar bear fur, is made of nylon and is covered with a dark colored PEDOT material. PEDOT absorbs heat effectively like polar bear skin.
According to the developers, a jacket made of such material is 30% lighter than a jacket made of the same cotton. At the same time, it is able to maintain a comfortable body temperature at an ambient temperature of 10 degrees lower than a similar cotton jacket, provided there is sunlight.
