Archbishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), Metropolitan of Kiev Onuphry said he has Russian citizenship along with Ukraine. Reported by “Strana.ua”.

According to him, after graduating from the Moscow Theological School and Academy, he spent 19 years in the Moscow region as a monk of the Holy Trinity Saint Sergius Lavra. Onufry stressed that he could not enter Odessa. The publication states that since 1988 the Metropolitan has already been on the territory of Ukraine.

“At that time, the Soviet Union collapsed and I obtained a Ukrainian passport as a de facto citizen of Russia (because I had a permanent residence permit in Russia, which means citizenship in the modern sense). At the same time, Russian citizenship was automatically extended, but I was not interested in it and did not use it, then it did not matter and no one was prosecuted for it, ”says Onufriy.

Metropolitan, after the deterioration of Russian-Ukrainian relations, noted that he decided to renounce his Russian citizenship.
