Scientists from the University of Sussex have developed a mathematical model that reflects the best conditions for men to reach orgasm. Research published in the journal Chaos: Journal of Interdisciplinary Nonlinear Science.

The researchers developed the equations by analyzing data on the four phases of the male arousal cycle: arousal, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. In doing so, they relied on a 1966 study that formed the basis of the Masters-Johnson sexual response cycle theory, which included data on 10,000 sexual acts performed in the lab between 382 women and 312 men.

The researchers also used data from a 2006 study in which participants were inserted into fMRI machines and monitored for neurological changes during sex and orgasm. The model developed by the scientists also takes into account spontaneous excitations during the day, the presence of spinal cord injuries, and emission.

As a result, the scientists obtained two mathematical equations: one related to psychological factors, the other to physiological factors. This allowed them to find the ideal conditions needed to reach orgasm. For example, they learned that too much psychological arousal early on can make it harder to reach orgasm.

The authors noted that there is no one-size-fits-all solution in gender, so their findings apply to many, but not all, people.
