A range of equipment will be installed in the Taurida cave to monitor seismic activity. In this respect informs Russian Geographical Society.

Taurida is an expanded karst cave located near the village of Zuya in the central region of Crimea. It was last opened in 2018 during the paving of the road. The remains of several prehistoric animals were found inside, including the bones of a giant predatory short-faced hyena pachycrocuta, a mastodon, saber-toothed cats, and Dmanis ostriches. Now, an antenna complex consisting of GPS and GLONASS systems will be installed at this natural monument to predict possible earthquakes.

“In Crimea, there are all conditions for the occurrence of earthquakes caused by the interaction of the Black Sea Plate with the Crimean mountain range. Even in ancient Greek sources you can find evidence of severe earthquakes in the Crimea. In the 20th century, two major earthquakes occurred on the peninsula, known as the Great Crimean earthquakes of 1927. Moreover, the size of one of them, September, reached nine, which led to great destruction, ”said Valery Kalinchuk of the Southern Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The need to monitor seismic activity in this area is linked to these factors. The antennas of the future, working as GPS trackers, will allow you to notice small shifts in the lithospheric plates. According to seismologists, the Taman Peninsula region adjacent to the Crimea has long been under pressure from the south of the Black Sea Plate and is reducing its northeasterly movement to the north.
