Venezuela will join China’s lunar research station project. In this respect informs China Deep Space Research Laboratory (DSEL).
This statement was made following a visit to China by Marglad Bencomo, head of the Bolivarian Space Agency (ABAE). There, he visited the DSEL laboratory, where he was greeted by laboratory head Wu Yanhua, a former deputy director of the China National Space Administration (CNSA). As reported in the statement, the parties exchanged views on plans to develop deep space (outside low Earth orbit). Bencomo said Venezuela is ready to sign a memorandum of understanding between China and Venezuela to jointly build the International Lunar Research Station, which is expected to be operational by 2030.
Venezuela will be the first country to join China and Russia in this project, the development of which is played by the Chinese side. Wu Yanhua expressed his hope that the BRICS and Latin American countries would also participate in the project. At the same time, Brazil has already signed the Artemis Accords, a US-proposed plan for cooperation in deep space, including the exploration of the moon, during the Artemis project. Some space experts suggest that Venezuela’s involvement would be symbolic, as the country is underdeveloped in space technology compared to China. Such a partnership is likely to be beneficial for China, both in the image of international cooperation and in achieving its political goals.
