The electron beam energy of the SKIF plant has been increased 30 times. This was reported by the press service of the Institute of Nuclear Physics. GI Budker (INP) SB RAS.
The SKIF accelerator is located in Novosibirsk and is designed for experiments in the field of fundamental physics. It is capable of producing extremely bright and intense X-rays necessary in chemical, physical and biological research. Currently, the construction of the complex is in the final stages, a full-fledged launch is expected in 2024.
Now the electrons in the beam in the linear part of this accelerator are accelerated to an energy of 30 MeV. For comparison, their energies did not exceed 1 MeV during the first launches. The “velocity” of electrons is expressed in terms of energy, because as it approaches the speed of light, with further acceleration, first of all the mass of the particle changes, not its actual velocity.
According to the project, by 2024 the linear accelerator, which is part of the entire complex, will reach parameters of 200 MeV. The results obtained allow us to say that these parameters will be achieved.
The linear accelerator (linac) is one of the main parts of the SKIF accelerator complex. In it, an electron beam is formed, which for further acceleration enters first the reinforcing synchrotron, and then the accumulator source of the synchrotron radiation.
